Cambridge Corpus Christi College New Court Corpus Christi College is commonly referred to as "Corpus" by Cambridge students. Its full name is "The College of Corpus Christi and the Blessed Virgin Mary". Located in the heart of Cambridge on Trumpington Street, Corpus Christi is just down the road from King’s College Chapel. In the 1740s, Archbishop Thomas Herring left £1,000 to rebuild the college, which led to several failed attempts to start work. In 1770, Matthias Mawson, the former Bishop and Dean of Ely, bequeathed £3,000 to cover the cost of demolishing and rebuilding the college, but this was not enough. It was not until 1822, when £55,000 had been accumulated in the rebuilding fund, that work began. William Wilkins, who had just completed major works at Downing, King's and Trinity Colleges, was appointed architect, and New Court was completed in 1827 in a neo-Gothic style.
